A Touch Test Doesn't Tell The Real Story

Shopping for replacement windows? Watch out for a sales pitch where the salesperson will simply ask you to touch pieces of aluminum, vinyl and wood at room temperature, then ask you which feels the coolest and you'll be right. Aluminum will always feel cooler than vinyl or wood at room temperature because the metal is an excellent conductor, and allows heat to flow rapidly from your hand to the metal. The inference you are being asked to draw, however, is that because aluminum feels cooler, it is less desirable for window construction than other materials. There are health and safety issues to consider.
